(after upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 1)

After installing either Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 or Windows XP Service Pack 1 (which both include Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1), you may find that you are unable to access your e-mail attachments in Outlook Express. You may find that the paper clip is greyed out and the Save Attachment feature is unavailable. You may also see an alert bar that says “Outlook Express removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your email”.

To be able to access your attachments follow the following steps:

bullet

Open Outlook Express in your usual way.

bullet

Click Tools.

bullet

Click Options….

bullet

The Options window should appear.

bullet

Click the Security tab.

bullet

Click the box “Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus check box” (under Virus Protection).

bullet

Click OK.

bullet

Close and restart Outlook Express.

bullet

You should now be able to access attachments.

IMPORTANT: Please ensure before you open your attachments that you scan them for viruses. To do this, save your attachments and then run your virus protection on the selected files.
