Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP, Vista and 7

In order to keep your computer at its optimum level, CyberGuru recommends you follow the following set of computer house-keeping duties. Depending on your type and use of your computer, these may be more or less important than what is stated here.

Daily

Virus Scanning

Making sure your computer is free of viruses must not be under estimated. Make sure your virus checker is set to automatically virus check any files that come in contact with your computer, including email and chat files.

Backups

Depending on the type of work you do, daily backups could “save your bacon” at some stage in your computer’s lifetime. How often you need to work with important files depends on how often you need to back up. Remember: it’s better to be safe than sorry! HOW-TO GUIDE AVAILABLE.

Spyware and Malware Scanning

Malicious Mobile Code, such as spyware and malware, can significantly affect your computer’s performance and put you at risk of your data being sent out to unauthorised users. HOW-TO GUIDE AVAILABLE.

Weekly

Automatic Virus Scanning

Ensure your computer is set up to do an automatically virus scan during the week. This is best done when the computer is not in use. Norton AntiVirus automatically scans each Friday night at 8:00. Make sure your computer is left on during this time.

Windows Update

Microsoft’s Windows Update website can notify, download and install for you important updates for your computer. We recommend that weekly you visit the Windows Update website to make sure you have all the critical updates installed for your computer. If this is your work computer, please check with your system administrator that this is okay to do so first. HOW-TO GUIDE AVAILABLE.

Monthly

Disk Cleanup

Run Disk Cleanup and it will clear your computer from downloaded program files, temporary files (internet and others) and other assorted files.
HOW-TO GUIDE AVAILABLE.

Disk Defragmenter

Disk Defragmenter reorganises the files using the usage patterns of your programs and files on your computer to improve its efficiency. Running it regularly enables you to keep your computer running in top condition. HOW-TO GUIDE AVAILABLE.

Half-Yearly/Yearly

PC Cleaning

If you confident, open the case and clear the dust away from the innards of your computer. However, this is not for the amateur. If you feel this is beyond you, leave this step.
