Microsoft Windows
2000/XP
Previous how-to guides that I have
written on this topic have become obsolete with the launch of Windows XP.
Why? Many changes have taken place
within the operating system itself. However, thankfully we still have a
(although cut-down) version of ScanDisk called Chkdsk and a new version of
Disk Defragmenter to perform regularly tuning and maintenance with.
So here’s how to do it now:
To
do fortnightly:
Chkdsk (Check computer’s
hard disk for errors)
To run it, click Start / Run… / and type “chkdsk”
Disk Defragmenter
(Organises files to make computer faster)
To run it, click Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Disk
Defragmenter
Make sure your screen saver is switched off.
Click Defragment.
To
do weekly (just a reminder!):
To most of clients who run Norton
AntiVirus: please ensure your computer is left on at 8:00 on Friday night
for the weekly virus check. And make sure you keep your virus definitions
up to date!
