In Windows XP, you are able to enable Windows Update to automatically download and install updates for your computer. Here’s how to enable it.

Click Start.

Click Control Panel.

bullet

Click Performance and Maintenance.

Under “or pick a Control Panel icon” choose System.

Select the Automatic Updates tab.

Ensure there is a tick labelled “Keep my computer up to date. With this setting enabled, Windows Update software may be automatically updated prior to applying any other updates”, if it is not there, click it.

Under Settings, choose “Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule I specify” and change the default date and time as you wish.

Click OK.

That’s it! This will enable your computer to automatically download and install the updates at the particular date and time you specified.

Please note: If you wish to pause the downloading of an update, right click on the Windows Update icon near the clock and choose, Pause Downloading.

To download other non-critical updates, do the following:

 Click Start.

bullet

 Point to All Programs.

bullet

 Click Windows Update.

bullet

Follow the instructions to install these updates.
