It says it's version 2.0, but I don't believe it!
It says it's version 2.0,
but I don't believe it!

Before reading this review on MSN Messenger Service 2.0, please read the review I wrote on the first edition of this particular software.

In this first major update to Microsoft's (or should I say "MSN's" chat program), I can honestly not much has changed from my first look at version one.

Yes, there are improvements, but I feel not enough to give it the big 2.0. Some of the newer "features" include:

bullet"Rich Text" - The ability to insert coloured and fancy styles of fonts into your messages.
bulletAn "Mail" button on the toolbar - this is my favourite new feature, allowing easier access to Hotmail and able to tell how many new messages there are.
bulletLarger advertising panel - MSN calls it "news and headlines", but I bet it eventually becomes advertising.
bullet"Always on Top" - keeps MSN Messenger on top (meaning the foreground) of all other  programs that you are running.
bulletExtra juicy bits - And a number of so-called "Usability improvements" and "easier setup" - neither of which could I discover.

Thankfully, the update feature seems to be less forceful and doesn't come up as often. I believe this is due to the withdrawal of the AOL Instant Messenger compatibility inside of it. However, I do wish MSN Messenger was more like ICQ (a similar program from AOL) in a great number of ways (that is with more capabilities), but without the huge space bloat that ICQ now has gained.

But for the newbie Internet chatter and those with limited space, it is well worth a place on your computer. Best of all though, it remains free, courtesy of Microsoft.

Scorecard: MSN Messenger 2.0

Score: 8.5 out of 10
Pros: It's getting better all the time!
Cons: Would like it to be more like ICQ, but I guess as they say "all things come to those who wait"!
Price: Free
Distributor: Microsoft
Web Site: http://messenger.msn.com

N.B: A MSN Hotmail account is also required to use the software, but can be set up if you don't already have one.
