Tips for success in the ICT industry

Chris Jeffery, Proprietor/Chief Guru of CyberGuru, will be presenting “Tips for success” at the first Australian Computer Society (ACS) Queensland Branch Young IT Networking Night for 2014.

The Australian Computer Society (ACS) Queensland Branch Young IT Networking Night is being held at the Central Queensland University Brisbane Campus, Level 6, 160 Ann Street Brisbane on Wednesday 12 February 2014 at 5:30pm for 6.00pm.

Chris was awarded the ACS Young ICT Professional of the Year by the Queensland Branch in 2012 for “his initiative and leadership in promoting and serving the ICT community in Queensland”.

The event will provide plenty of time for networking between ACS Queensland Young IT members and getting to know your peers as well as an opportunity to share your ideas and topics that members are interested in and discuss them with the ACS Queensland’s new Young IT committee.

Chris’ last presentation was well received and fully booked out!  Along with Chris, there’ll be another couple of presenters with the Young IT committee talking about their careers and backgrounds.

If you know of anyone who may be interested attending, or attending yourself, please visit the ACS website (link opens in new window), for more information and to register.

Five tips to improve your productivity in Windows

Five tips to improve your productivity in Windows

Looking for some ways to make your computer life easier and improve your productivity in Windows? In this article, we provide some hints and tips using the built in features within Windows. These screenshots have been taken in Windows 8.1 but will work equally well in Windows 7 and Windows 8 also.

Use Steps Recorder to create simple documentation

If you are looking to create simple documentation, why not use Windows’ built-in Steps Recorder application (known as Problem Steps Recorder in Windows 7)? Open Steps Recorder from your Start menu or Start screen, and click Start Recording. It will take pictures of each step along the way and also put together a description of the step in words.

Pin files and folders onto your task bar

Did you know you can pin often-used files and folders onto your Windows task bar? This will enable you to have easy access to these without searching for them in Windows Explorer and File Explorer. When you have the file or folder you wish to pin, simply drag it to the task bar. You can reorder the position of the pinned folders and files also by clicking and dragging them.

Customise your Windows appearance

Bored of your existing desktop wallpapers Windows provides? You can access a range of free themes, wallpapers and language packs to enhance the appearance of Windows. There’s even themes specifically featuring Queensland scenes! You can download these directly from Windows. Right-click on your desktop and click Personalise, then click Get more themes online. This will take you to the Personalisation Gallery (link open in new window).

Speed up your computer with ReadyBoost

Available in versions of Windows since Vista, ReadyBoost enables you to use to the available disk space on USB flash drives and other flash cards to increase the performance on devices with limited memory (such as laptops). Simply insert it into an available USB port or memory slot and click “Use with ReadyBoost” to give your computer a boost!

Use Windows XP Mode for legacy applications

Screenshot of Windows XP ModeWhilst Windows XP is nearly out of support, computers running programs designed for earlier versions of Windows may be a candidate to use Windows XP Mode, which is included as part of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions as a way of running legacy applications.

Windows XP Mode can be downloaded for free from Microsoft’s Windows XP Mode website (link opens in new window), however please note that this may still present security risks as if it was installed on your normal PC as it will not be patched or updated after this time.

Do you have internet security software on your smartphone or tablet?

Do you have internet security software on your smartphone or tablet?

CyberGuru works mainly across Windows devices, PCs and servers, however we have clients who as part of their home or office network may use a smartphone or tablet as well (across many varying types of Mac or Android systems). Whilst it was once claimed that these devices can’t get viruses, we strongly believe in the use of an internet security software for these as well.

Security issues can arise from mistakenly installing a malicious application, opening an attachment, visiting a rouge website via a link, all of which may result in all kinds of trouble.

If you are a user of Symantec Norton 360 Multi-Device or McAfee All Access these licences can be installed on Apple and Android devices as well. Symantec and McAfee also provide free versions of their software which may be installed on the majority of devices. If you are running a vendor’s product already on your computers, we would suggest choosing this on your devices as well.

Whilst we strongly prefer commercial software due to the limitations of some of the free antivirus software, if you are looking for some free alternatives we suggest access your application store or review the vendor’s websites below for more information:

  • Avast (link opens in new window)
  • BitDefender (link opens in new window)
  • ClamXAV (link opens in new window)
  • Sophos (link opens in new window)
  • WebRoot (link opens in new window)

After all, some security to prevent issues is better than no protection at all. CyberGuru can help you to select and install an application for your smartphone or tablet. Please contact us for more information on our Support solution today.

New year’s resolutions for computer users

New year’s resolutions for computer users

No doubt many have set personal and professional resolutions for the new year. As you are getting back into using your computer for work and home, we have provided five new year’s resolutions we suggest you do to keep for yourself and your computer this year:

  • Schedule backups of your important files weekly
There’s no need to have to remember or put off creating your backups any longer. Using an automatic backup schedule, you can nearly set and forget backups (just run a test once in a while to make sure it is working!).
  • Run Disk Cleanup to remove unnecessary files fortnightly
Disk Cleanup is an application included with Windows that provides the ability to safely remove unnecessary temporary files from your computer. By removing these old or redundant files from your computer you can save disk space for more valuable information.
  • Scan for Windows and applications updates monthly
In order to improve the security and reliability of your computer, Windows and applications provide regular updates. These updates may provide enhanced features and reduce the chances of your computer experiencing problems.
  • Change your passwords to ensure they are secure bi-yearly
Passwords that you have used for a long time should be changed. Recent website security breaches from organisations may make you more vulnerable to hacking attempts. We suggest that you change your website passwords on a regular basis and make not be the same as other websites.
  • Install and maintain your internet security software yearly
Having a well maintained internet security software that is kept up-to-date with the latest definitions is your first defence against viruses, malware and other nasties. Ensure you are running the latest versions of your internet security software by running the appropriate update feature.

Through our Consulting, Support and Training computer solutions, we can assist in implementing these resolutions and provide you with the necessary resources to help you continue with them throughout the year. Please feel free to contact us to enquire how we can assist you to do these.
