Ask CyberGuru – What happens if I forget to renew my domain name registration?

Ask CyberGuru

In this month’s instalment of Ask CyberGuru, we answer the question, “What happens if I forget to renew my domain name registration?”.

When you buy an Australian domain name (such as .com.au, .org.au, and net.au) you own the use of that domain for the term of the registration (usually two years).

If you forget to renew your domain registration and it expires there is a 30 day grace period, during which time you can renew your domain by paying the renewal fee. During this time the domain is removed from the internet and cannot be updated. Regardless of when the domain name is renewed, the new expiry date is automatically set to 2 years from the previous expiry date.

If you fail to renew your registration during the grace period it becomes a “dropped domain” and can be bought instantly by an interested party. There are many websites and third parties which monitor dropped domains, looking for interesting domain names to buy and on-sell to new companies or re-sell to the old owner for what can be a large profit. If your domain name is scooped up by one of these companies it can be a long and expensive process to buy it back.

If you have an international domain name (such as .com, .org, .net or .biz) there is an additional redemption period after the grace period before it becomes a dropped domain, but the price of renewal goes up significantly.

The easiest way to ensure this doesn’t happen is to renew your domain registration as soon as you receive your first renewal reminder email. If you have your domain name hosted with CyberGuru we provide several reminder emails to our clients to ensure they don’t forget.

Seniors Safety Forum

Last Friday CyberGuru’s Proprietor/Chief Guru, Chris Jeffery had the honour of speaking at the Seniors Safety Forum on cyber security. Speaking alongside the Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Chris informed the local seniors in the community how to protect themselves against phone and internet scammers.

Seniors Safety Forum

Chris spoke about phone and internet scams and how to avoid becoming a victim. As part of this we provided flyers on the ABCs of dealing with suspected scammers and as well as a Computer Security Checklist to assist seniors in staying safe.

Seniors Safety Forum

The was a big success and the presentation well received. Over 60 seniors from the local area attended and positive feedback was provided. Our thanks the Honourable Stirling Hinchcliffe MP and Cr Jared Cassidy for organising this great event.

Digital Brisbane Speed Networking Event 2016

Digital Brisbane Speed Networking Event 2016

Digital Brisbane Speed Networking Event 2016

On the evening of Wednesday 8 June 2016, I attended the Digital Brisbane Speed Networking Event, held at The Loft, located in West End, Brisbane.

This is the fourth Digital Brisbane Speed Networking event I have attended since their introduction in 2013. It was an opportunity for both collaboration and networking between around 100 guests to find our “digital match”, by meeting with a range of organisations are seeking suppliers or partners in the digital space.

Over an hour and a half, I met individually with seven “dates” for about eight minutes each, across a range of sectors. I sought to understand what they were seeking and see whether I could address these needs, provide some general advice or recommend another organisation who may be able to assist.

I have been successful in obtaining new clients and referrals through previous Digital Brisbane Speed Networking Events, and appreciated the opportunity to participate in this great initiative again this year. I look forward to meeting with the new found matches over the coming weeks.

If you or someone you know are looking for a digital match, contact CyberGuru today for an obligation-free appointment.
