We are frequently being asked, “is it now time to upgrade to Windows 11?”. Whilst we wrote about the topic back in late September, we felt the topic was revisiting again now a few months on.
Since its launch back in October, and our subsequent blog articles, we referred to the fact that we suggested holding off on the Windows 11 upgrade for the immediate future until there has been at least one update of Windows 11. This update is expected sooner rather than later but has not an official date set at the time of writing.
Whilst we are often an early adopter, especially when it comes to new operating systems, given the significant changes to hardware requirements, new design within the user interface and apps and the various additional new apps being added, we would recommend continuing to hold off until further notice.
This won’t however stop Microsoft from trying to upgrade to Windows 11. If your computer is ready for Windows 11, we are now seeing various prompts inside of Windows advising that the “Upgrade to Windows 11 is ready for your PC”. Some of these are contained on the Windows notification area (located on the right-hand side near the clock), but more prominently when you start your computer offering offer you to upgrade.
Should you open Windows Update, originally the prompt advised that your computer meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11. However, the specific timing varies between computer to computer as to when you can get this. When it is ready for your computer, you will be offered the ably to download and install. However, you can also stay Windows 10 for now, given it will still be supported for a few more years.
Importantly, if you do go ahead, please note that Microsoft has advised that some Windows 10 features are not available in Windows 11, and certain features will have “additional system requirements”. Whilst you have 10 days to go back to Windows 10 if you need to do once you have upgraded, it is not yet understood that all of your programs and files will be where you left them.
