A very common question that I have been asked is “Should I upgrade to Windows 10?”. It is difficult to provide specific advice to answer this question, as everyone is different in terms of their approaches to the free upgrade. Many are finding the notifications to remind them to upgrade a disturbance and others an encouragement to upgrade.
We are seeing an increasing number of computers being upgraded to Windows 10. As the free upgrade offer is available until July, it is becoming the time to make the decision. I normally help clients base this on their need for the new features and the age of their computer.
With the November Update, many of the features and improvements introduced have encouraged more people to make the jump, some with more success than others. The new features now available in the November Update included Cortana, your own personal digital assistant similar to Apple’s Siri, as well as improvements to the built-in apps including Edge.
Generally, if the computer is a brand-name, up to two years old and running common line of business applications (such as Microsoft Office), I have been recommending the upgrade to Windows 10. However, if it is a built computer that is over two years old or running less common applications, I would not do so.
Before you upgrade you should ensure you have a full and complete backup of your programs and files should you need to return to your previous version of Windows. Whilst Windows does provide a rollback facility, it is best to have a separate backup should this facility not work correctly. We will discuss this in a future Blog article.
